Suggestion: 2013 should be a hiatus year for people of faith

10 Nov

Here’s today’s COMMENT FROM AN OLD FART: Moi is on hiatus from now until January 1, 2014. This is the definition of hiatus:

n. pl. hi·a·tus·es or hiatus

1. A gap or interruption in space, time, or continuity; a break: “We are likely to be disconcerted by . . . hiatuses of thought” (Edmund Wilson).

2. Linguistics A slight pause that occurs when two immediately adjacent vowels in consecutive syllables are pronounced, as in reality and naive.

3. Anatomy A separation, aperture, fissure, or short passage in an organ or body part.

One has the ability to choose whether to be involved and/or the level of involvement. Moi would argue that for people of faith the involvement should be self-contained on two levels. The first is to find a faith community which will nurture and build you where you can contribute in the building of others. Secondly, one should work on building one’s internal strength and character. As for the wider world, it will be what it will be.

“The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men, Gang aft agley, An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain, For promis’d joy! (The best laid schemes of Mice and Menoft go awry,And leave us nothing but grief and pain,For promised joy!”

Robert Burns, To a Mouse (Poem, November, 1785)Scottish national poet (1759 – 1796

If there is anything that disasters like “Katrina” and “Sandy” teach is that the rhythm of the universe is, well, the rhythm of the universe and no person has control over that. 2013 will be a time to renew your spirit and your connection.

One does not have to be involved in anything that they don’t want to. Work on projects dear to your heart that refresh and renew your spirit. Just don’t engage anything or anyone who does not validate what you believe and who you are. On January 1, 2014, you will have a better view of what comes next.
