Retailers are in it for the $$$: Don’t shop till you drop on Thanksgiving Day

Here’s today’s COMMENT FROM AN OLD FART: Moi started shopping more at Target especially when J.C. Penney announced they would phase out their human sales staff in favor of self-service kiosks. Moi is evaluating whether to patronize Target because of Target’s patronizing attitude toward their employees. Huffington Post reports in the article, Target To Start Black Friday At 9 p.m. On Thanksgiving; Employees, Families Protest Early Opening Time:

Target employees working Black Friday shifts may have to report to work earlier than ever.

CNN Money reports that Target’s 9 p.m. Thanksgiving opening is the earliest the store has ever started its Black Friday sales.

Last year, some Target stores opened at 12 a.m. Friday, despite a petition that garnered more than 200,000 signatures from people asking the company to “save Thanksgiving for its employees, their families and consumers.”

This year there are new petitions on with similar messages.

One petition, posted by C. Renee of Corona, Calif., urges signers to protest the “Thanksgiving Creep” that pushes retailers to open earlier and earlier on Black Friday. The petition has already garnered more than 166,000 supporters.

Dear Gregg W. Steinhafel,

Return to Friday morning opening

I’m not complaining about being a minimum wage worker. Target, as a company, does some good and maintains a commitment to charity. Thanksgiving, though, is one of the three days retail workers get off a year, a day most spend with family. The issue is not black Friday, though it’s not exactly this country’s shining moment. Every year the opening time gets pushed up more and more. Midnight last year was pushing it. How can you expect workers to spend time with family and then stay up all night. It’s inhumane and inconsiderate. You are most likely tucked away in bed while workers are in the stores pushing back a rabid crowd of shoppers trying to get an iPod. A 9pm opening disgusts me and symbolizes everything that is wrong with this country. Give Thanksgiving back to families. The world won’t end if people have wait 7 more hours to buy useless junk that will be outdated in a year anyway. As Reuters notes, stores like Target Corp and Toys R Us Inc are offering holiday specials earlier to kickstart the biggest “selling season” of the year. U.S. retailers earn more than a third of their annual sales during the season, according to the report.Target told Reuters that, “anecdotally,” many of its employees get excited about working Black Friday. And Kathee Tesija, executive vice president of merchandising, for Target, told CNN Money that customers want the shift.

“We heard from our guests that they look forward to kicking off their holiday shopping with deal-hunting on Thanksgiving night,” Tesija said. “Opening at 9 p.m. gives Target’s Black Friday guests a more convenient way to create an after-dinner shopping event that the entire family can enjoy….”

Petitions, like the one from Jennifer Ann, the sister of a Target employee from Vernon Hills, Ill., are featured on the site

Moi is a “Target guest” and she thinks the Target management is a bunch of idiots. See, Christmas should be like Vegas beginning on December 1

and It’s Merry Christmas, Dammit!

All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

Tolstoy was correct that there are certain characteristics of happy families. Better Kid Care Program lists the characteristics of stable families:

There may be differences in families, but similar qualities can be found in stable families.

Here are some characteristics that make up a stable family:

Unconditional love for each other.

Parents spend time with their children.

The family members respect each other.

Parents teach their children the values that are important to them.

There is good communication. The parents really listen to their child.

Parents serve as good role models, understanding that children learn from what they see happening. The

old adage, “actions speak louder than words,” has been proven over and over again.

Education is valued. Parents provide their children with opportunities to explore and learn new things.

Basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing are met.Blding Strong Families

Stick to the facts while communicating an important issue to your child.

Set clear, fair rules, and be consistent.

Be loving.

Know your child’s friends.

When you do not know something, don’t be afraid to tell your child this. Then try to get information from someone else.

When you make a mistake, say you are sorry.

Time spent together has more value than material things.

Note, Time spent together has more value than material things.”

Our goal as a society should be:

A healthy child in a healthy family who attends a healthy school in a healthy neighborhood ©

The National Marriage Project which is housed at the University of Virginia finds in 2010 State of Our Unions: When Marriage Disappears: The New Middle America by Brad Wilcox:

When Marriage Disappears argues that shifts in marriage mores, increases in unemployment, and declines in religious attendance are among the trends driving the retreat from marriage in Middle America. This report finds:

1 – Marriage is an emerging dividing line between America’s mod- erately educated middle and those with college degrees.

2 – Marital quality is declining for the moderately educated middle but not for their highly educated peers.

3 – Divorce rates are up for moderately educated Americans, relative to those who are highly educated.

4 – The moderately educated middle is dramatically more likely than highly educated Americans to have children outside of marriage.

5 – The children of highly educated parents are now more likely than in the recent past to be living with their mother and father, while children with moderately educated parents are far less likely to be living with their mother and father.

Target management, you are just one more institution putting the family under pressure. It is up to consumers NOT to show up on Thanksgiving Day. Retailers are in it for the $$$: Don’t shop till you drop on Thanksgiving Day.

Where are the fathers? Problem is that it is NOT ‘Raining Men’
